Mint Hot Chocolate Ingredients

You will need:

  • 2½ cups whole milk
  • 1½ cups heavy cream
  • 1¼ teaspoons peppermint extract
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1¼ cups white chocolate chips
  • 3 to 4 drops green food coloring
  • Canned whipped topping, for garnish
  • ¼ cup mint chocolate candies, crushed or finely chopped Andes mint, peppermint patties, or any other mint chocolate candies (optional garnish)

Substitutions and Additions

PINK VERSION: If you want a pink version of the drink, you can substitute the green food coloring for 2-3 drops of red food coloring. You can also substitute the mint chocolate candies for crushed peppermint candies. 

CHOCOLATE CHIPS: You can use any white chocolate chips, but the Ghirardelli chips melt beautifully. 

TOPPING: You can also substitute mini marshmallows for whipped cream. Add chocolate shavings or a candy cane for even more decadence. You could even garnish your drinks with fresh mint leaves if you want to be extra fancy.

ALCOHOLIC VERSION: If you’d like to turn this into a grown-up drink, add a shot of peppermint schnapps to your mug along with the hot chocolate.

How to Make Mint Hot Chocolate

PRO TIP: You can make this drink a day in advance and store it, ungarnished, in the fridge until you are ready to serve.

STEP ONE: Using a 4 to 5-quart heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, add the whole milk, heavy cream, peppermint extract, and vanilla. Heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

STEP TWO: Add the white chocolate chips and stir continuously until the chips have completely melted. Remove from the heat.

PRO TIP: The chocolate can settle at the bottom of the pot. To avoid burning your homemade hot cocoa, make sure to cook it over medium heat and stir continuously.

STEP THREE: Stir in the green food coloring.

STEP FOUR: Pour into the glasses/mugs. Swirl generously with the canned whipped topping and sprinkle with the crushed mint chocolate candies. Serve while nice and warm.
