Coffee Smoothie Ingredients

You will need:

  • ¾ cup cold strong brewed coffee
  • ½ cup whole milk, or almond milk
  • 2 medium frozen ripe bananas, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 teaspoons unsweetened cacao powder, or unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup crushed ice cubes
  • Canned whipped cream, optional garnish

PRO TIP: If you are looking for a stronger coffee flavor, try 2 shots of espresso rather than regular coffee.

Substitutions and Additions

PEANUT BUTTER: You can add creamy peanut butter or almond butter for a protein boost in your banana coffee smoothie

COFFEE: You can substitute instant coffee for brewed coffee in this delicious smoothie.

MIX-INS: You can also add chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds, oats, or protein powder.

HONEY: Instead of honey, you could add maple syrup for natural sweetness in this creamy smoothie. You could also add a dash of vanilla extract for a slightly different flavor.

TOPPING: In addition to whipped cream, make this treat even more decadent with shaved chocolate on top.

MILK: Non-dairy milk, such as almond milk or coconut milk, would also be delicious. To make your smoothie extra creamy, use heavy whipping cream instead of milk.

COCOA POWDER: If you like chocolate, you can increase the amount of cocoa powder in your smoothie.

How to Make Coffee Smoothie

PRO TIP: This recipe makes two drinks. You can easily double or half the recipe to adjust the number of servings, although we’d recommend keeping the cocoa powder measurement as is.

STEP ONE: Add the coffee, milk, frozen bananas, honey, cacao powder, and ice cubes to a blender.

PRO TIP: If you choose to use the cacao powder, just be aware that if you are caffeine sensitive, it may be better to cut the powder to 1 teaspoon or use 1 teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder.

STEP TWO: Pulse a few times to get the blender blades going, then blend for 20 to 30 seconds until smooth.

PRO TIP: If you find your smoothie is too thick, adding a little bit more milk or coffee will help thin it out to a drinkable consistency.

STEP THREE: Pour into two 16-ounce glasses. Garnish with canned whipped cream if desired.
