Blue Hawaiian Jello Shots Ingredients

You will need:

  • 6 ounces berry blue jello mix
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • ¾ cup Malibu Rum
  • ¼ cup Blue Curacao
  • Maraschino cherries, for garnish
  • Fresh pineapple chunks, for garnish

PRO TIP: Use up to 1½ cups of alcohol for a stronger jello shot. For a lighter jello shot, you can use additional cold water or pineapple juice and not as much alcohol. You need four cups total of liquid to combine with the jello mixture.

Substitutions and Additions

PINEAPPLE JUICE: I like to get the little mini (6-ounce) cans of pineapple juice to keep on hand in my pantry. This way, I do not need to open a large bottle of pineapple juice if I am only using it to make a couple of cocktails.

How to Make Blue Hawaiian Jello Shots

STEP ONE: In a medium bowl or large (4-cup) measuring cup with a spout, whisk together blue jello mix and 1 cup of boiling water until jello is fully dissolved.

STEP TWO: Once the jello is fully dissolved, stir in the cold water, pineapple juice, Malibu, and blue curacao. Mix until combined.

PRO TIP: The ratio of each type of alcohol and fruit juice will vary the flavor somewhat – you can adjust however you like. Do not use more than 2 cups of alcohol to ensure that the jello still sets up properly.

STEP THREE: Carefully pour the mixture between small plastic shot cups. Fill just under the top, so they don’t spill.

PRO TIP: Setting the jello shot glasses on a rimmed baking sheet will help make it easier to transport them to the fridge for chilling.

STEP FOUR: Transfer jello shots to the refrigerator and chill for 4 hours until set.

PRO TIP: The jello shots may firm up faster than 4 hours. If you are using shallower plastic containers and if you use icy cold water for your cold water, they will not take as long to set.

STEP FIVE: Just before serving, top each jello shot with a maraschino cherry and a small piece of fresh pineapple.

How to Serve Blue Hawaiian Jello Shots

This jello shot version of a classic blue Hawaiian cocktail is the perfect addition to summer parties or even a summer-themed winter party. Loaded with yummy flavors from pineapple to coconut, made into a jello shot, you will love adding these to your next party menu. These colorful and delicious blue Hawaiian jello shots may look like the color of the ocean, but they taste so delicious you’ll feel like you’re sitting on a tropical beach.

Storage

IN THE FRIDGE: Jello shots will keep in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. Cover if you use containers that do not come with individual lids; otherwise, pop the lids on the plastic cups for storage. Do not store with the fruit pieces on top of the jello.

IN THE FREEZER: This fun tropical jello shot recipe doesn’t tend to freeze very well because of the gelatin and alcohol.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I store these coconut rum jello shots?

If you have any leftover jello shots, you can store them in the fridge for up to a week with their lids tightly on. You can make them three days ahead of your party before serving, but make sure you are storing the containers with the lids on.

Can you freeze blue jello shots?

I don’t find that jello shots freeze well because of the gelatin and alcohol. While you can pop them in the freezer for a few minutes to help speed along the setting process, you shouldn’t store them in the freezer after they’re done.

Can I make this simple recipe ahead of time?

These jello shots are the perfect recipe to put together a couple of days before your party. Just make sure they are well covered and kept in the fridge.
