Strawberry Christmas Trees Ingredients

You will need:

  • 24 ounces dark green candy melts (two 12-ounce packages)
  • 2 pounds fresh strawberries 18 large strawberries plus extra just in case
  • 1 frosted oatmeal cookies need 18 cookies
  • ¼ cup multi-colored nonpareils
  • 18 yellow star candies

Substitutions and Additions

COOKIES: Any cookie would work for the base of these adorable little Christmas trees. Pick gingersnaps, Oreo cookies, or any other cookie that you enjoy.

CANDY MELTS: Of course, green is the traditional color for these “trees” but there is no reason to limit yourself. Get wild and crazy and use your imagination to pick any color you’d like for the candy melts.

How to Make Strawberry Christmas Trees

STEP ONE: Rinse the strawberries and gently pat them dry. Make a clean slice from the base of each strawberry to remove the stem and create a base for the bottom of the strawberry “tree.”

STEP TWO: Place candy melts in the top pan of a double boiler. Heat over simmering water, stirring frequently, until the candy melts are smooth. Remove from over the simmering water. Dry the bottom of the pan with a dishtowel.

PRO TIP: Candy melts can be heated in the microwave as well. Heat in a microwave-safe bowl in 15 to 30-second intervals, stirring well between. Do not overheat, or they will seize up.

PRO TIP: You can add a few drops of vegetable oil to the candy melts to help thin them out to the desired consistency.

PRO TIP: It is critical that no water gets into the candy melts – they will seize up, and you will have to start over with a new package of candy melts.

STEP THREE: Use a toothpick or fork to dip the strawberry into the candy melt mixture. Tap off the excess candy from the strawberry.

STEP FOUR: Use a second fork to lift the strawberry from the dipping tool and onto the center of a cookie. You can also place a small dollop of the melted candy onto the center of the cookie before setting the strawberry down.

PRO TIP: We found it easiest to use a fork for dipping and transferring to the cookie base. The strawberries slipped off the toothpick too easily.

STEP FIVE: Sprinkle nonpareils over the dipped strawberry and place a star on top before the candy hardens.

PRO TIP: Candy melts firm up quickly after coating the strawberries (especially if the strawberries are cold). Add the candy sprinkles and tree topper fast.

STEP SIX: Reheat candy melts as needed to keep the mixture dippable.

How to Serve Strawberry Christmas Trees

Get in the festive spirit by serving these cute strawberry Christmas trees at holiday parties or gifting them to neighbors and friends. Make the presentation extra special by serving them on a platter dusted with some powdered sugar for a snowy effect. They would also be a great activity to make with the kids. Enjoy them with a mug of hot chocolate to wash them down.

Storage

Strawberry trees should be eaten the same day for best results, preferably within a few hours. Dipped strawberries do not keep well. If the strawberries are not fully coated in candy, the strawberry juice will eventually seep down into the cookie, making it soggy.

Strawberry Christmas trees will make you think of snowy winter days. Fresh strawberries are coated in a smooth  candy coating, covered with color sprinkles, adorned with a little star, and placed on top of a cookie. Celebrate the holidays with these tasty and adorable treats.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the best type of cookie to use for the base?

Most round cookies would be an excellent choice for the base of these festive little Christmas trees.

How do I store these treats?

It is a good idea to eat these strawberry Christmas trees right away. The strawberries will eventually make the cookie base soggy.

When working with the candy melts, can I reheat them if they start to harden?

You can reheat the melted candy melts as needed while you are working, so it is liquid enough to dip your strawberries.
